10 steel shelters – 3 m x 2 m x 2m
In 2007 Esther Shalev-Gerz completed over three years’ development of an intricate matrix of collaboration and communication with the citizens of Castlemilk, Glasgow – a neighbourhood on the periphery of the city.
A Thread resulted in ten new architectural shelters, designed with architect Ayelet Shalev that weave an imaginary line throughout the Castlemilk Park. Operating as a conduit that supported citizens not just to design the images printed on the individual canopies but to also choose the physical location of each shelter, Shalev-Gerz highlighted the extreme rarity of being allowed to make choices about how public spaces are managed and controlled. The users of each shelter become the recipient of a viewpoint selected for them by the residents.
Commissioned by curators Jason E. Bowman and Rachel Bradley on behalf of the Castlemilk Environment Trust; Shalev-Gerz advanced her long-term investigation into participation within contemporary art providing a catalyst for people to articulate complex relationships with their environment.

En 2007, Esther Shalev-Gerz a achevé le développement, long de plus de trois ans, d’une matrice complexe de collaboration et de discussion avec les habitants de Castlemilk, un quartier à la périphérie de la ville de Glasgow.
L’aboutissement de ce travail fut la construction de dix abris, conçus avec l’architecte Ayelet Shalev, qui tracent une ligne imaginaire à travers le parc de Castlemilk. En soutenant les participants non seulement dans la production des images imprimées sur les dais servant de toits aux abris, mais également dans le choix du site de chacun d’eux, Shalev-Gerz a souligné la rareté des moments où il est permis au citoyen ordinaire d’opérer des choix concernant la façon dont sont gérés et contrôlés les espaces publics. Les usagers des différents abris deviendront les bénéficiaires d’un point de vue sélectionné pour eux par les résidents.
Ce projet a permis à Shalev-Gerz d’avancer dans sa recherche à long terme sur la façon dont la participation à l’art contemporain peut offrir aux gens un catalyseur leur permettant de formuler les relations complexes qu’ils entretiennent avec leur environnement.
