In 2009 Esther Shalev-Gerz produced Still/Film in Vilnius, Lithuania where she was born and initially raised until the age of eight. Continuing her investigation into time, passage, authenticity and lineage she set herself the task of attempting to locate the childhood home of her late mother; who had flown Alytus at the age of nine. After targeted research in various archives, an official document informed Shalev-Gerz about a potential address.
On the journey from Vilnius to Alytus, Esther Shalev-Gerz photographed: the house where she herself had lived in Vilnius; a young forest en-route and finally the site of her mother’s house (which she had found by coincidence) all from multiple viewpoints with different cameras and particular lenses, producing atmospheric almost fugitive images. The exhibition also included a video created from the animation of a panoramic photograph by slowly varying its luminosity and a textwork that amalgamate in present tense the different strata traversing and composing the artwork: the time of Shalev-Gerz’s quest, the time of her mother’s childhood and fragments of her assistant familial history.

En 2009 Esther Shalev-Gerz réalise Still/Film à Vilnius en Lituanie, la ville dont elle est native et où a grandi jusqu’à l’âge de huit ans. Prolongeant son investigation des domaines comme le temps, le passage, l’authenticité et la lignée, elle s’est donnée pour tâche de tenter de localiser la maison d’enfance de sa mère aujourd’hui décédée et qui avait fui à l’âge de neuf ans la ville d’Alytus. Après avoir effectué des recherches ciblées dans différentes archives, elle trouve dans un document officiel une adresse possible.
Sur le trajet de Vilnius à Alytus, Esther Shalev-Gerz photographie la maison de Vilnius où elle avait elle-même résidée, une jeune forêt que traverse la route reliant les deux villes et pour finir le site de la maison maternelle – trouvée par hasard – depuis de multiples points de vue, avec différents appareils photo munis des différentes lentilles, ce qui donne des images à l’atmosphère flottante, presque fuyantes. L’exposition comprend également une vidéo créée à partir d’une photographie panoramique animée par un jeu de luminosité ainsi qu’un texte rassemblant par l’utilisation du présent les différentes strates qui traversent et composent cette oeuvre: le temps de la recherche de Shalev-Gerz, le temps de l’enfance de sa mère et des fragments de l’histoire de son assistant sur ce projet.
