ERASE THE PAST

1990-91
Bookwork and Slideshow

14 b/w slides

In 1991 following a year-long Berliner DAAD residency Esther Shalev-Gerz published the bookwork Erase the Past. Referencing flipbook animation each right-hand page shows a black and white photograph of the same wallpapered room – a chair at a round table with a vase of flowers, a curtain at the right-hand side of the image and a black and white photographic portrait on the wall.

As one flicks through this side of the book the depth of field shrinks and expands. Remaining constantly frozen, at the same scale, is the official portrait of Eric Honecker, Communist leader of the GDR (East Germany) until1989 who after re-unification was tried for high treason and war crimes. On the left hand side of the book we flip through the same room and to the same effect but are now confronted by a photographic portrait of Bertolt Brecht, playwright, writer and theoretician responsible for the development of collective theatre, life-long Socialist and believer in the possibilities of East Germany.

Examining how shifts in power alter our perceptions of official forms of portraiture, Shalev-Gerz’s Erase the Past depicts place as in constant flux and the paradox of how time and context render iconographic mutable.
