RITROVARE VOLTERRA

1998
Volterra, Italy
Installation

4 colour photographs variable dimensions and 7 alabaster objects.

In 1998 Esther Shalev-Gerz produced the photographic and sculptural work Ritrovare Volterra. Pitched almost two thousand feet above sea level at the edge of a ravine the beauty of the ancient Etruscan city of Volterra has defied the frequency of landslides for over three thousand years. This capricious mountain stratum, a site of successful digs for archaeological and cultural artefacts – contains and preserves layers of history.

In a series of photographic images Shalev-Gerz represented only the unpredictable mountainside as a positive and the remainder in photographic negative. The local visitors to the exhibition had difficulty to recognize their own landscape. Arranged in a circle in the centre of the installation were seven footprints made from alabaster, a porous and mutable material also capable of shifting physical identity. The 7 footprints of the artist left foot were stolen during the exhibition. The organizers then « took somebody that looked like » Shalev-Gerz and refabricated the alabaster objects and returned them to the artist

RITROVARE VOLTERRA

1998
Volterra, Italy
Installation
