In 2002 Esther Shalev-Gerz produced an installation from the multiple perceptions of lived experiences by residents of Cahors, France but also from images of material held in the municipal collection, also seen to be representative of the place and a custodian of its history.
In the installation Shalev-Gerz exhibited a video with fifty-five people of diverse ages offering their spoken responses to her question, “Why do you live in Cahors today?” Shalev-Gerz altered the video’s colour register so participants were depicted at the halfway mark between black and white and colour ensuring a subtle emphasis on the voice. Alongside the video were fifty-five photographs of artefacts chosen by Shalev-Gerz from the municipal museum’s accumulated and eclectic collection, which includes both the banal and extraordinary and the local and the foreign. The moving images – animated with people talking about displacement and settlement, about the passing of time and passage of people and of endurance and transformation were contrasted by the inanimate photographic images of artefacts.

En 2002 Esther Shalev-Gerz a réalisé une installation à partir des perceptions multiples des expériences vécues des habitants de Cahors, en France, ainsi que des images
d’objets contenus dans la collection municipale, considérée comme représentative de ce lieu et gardienne de son histoire.
Dans cette installation l’artiste a exposé une vidéo dans laquelle 55 personnes répondent à la question: « Pourquoi vivez-vous à Cahors aujourd’hui? ». Shalev-Gerz altère la tonalité des couleurs de la vidéo de telle manière que les participants apparaissaient à mi-chemin entre le noir et blanc et la couleur, ce qui met leurs voix subtilement en valeur. A côté de la vidéo se trouvent 55 photographies d’objets choisis par Shalev-Gerz parmi l’accumulation éclectique dont est composée la collection du musée municipal et qui inclut à la fois le banal et l’extraordinaire, le local et l’étranger. Les images animées du film, dans lequel les personnes évoquent le déplacement et l’installation, le temps qui passe et le passage des gens, ce qui résiste au temps et ce qui se transforme, sont contrastées par les images photographiques inanimées des objets.
