To coincide with Shalev-Gerz’s survey exhibition Ton Image me Regarde!?, Marta Gili, director of the Jeu de Paume commissioned a new work. The artist created the work D’eux/On Two. Through the act of commissioning the exhibition would not solely look backwards at Shalev-Gerz’s work but would rather meet her demand to understand the currency of the past as not disconnected from the present.
On Two presents a world inhabited by two philosophers who Esther Shalev-Gerz met in Paris but who, except from her mediation do not otherwise know each other, and two landscapes that do not share the same temporal or spatial zones.
The video projections depict how Rola Younes, originally from Lebanon, and the French philosopher Jacques Rancière strive to sustain their relationships to and perceptions of the world as vital and regenerative. Against the background of the Ile Seguin, west of Paris, and Cortes, an island off the west coast of Canada Rola Younes speaks of her passionate investigation of the cultures of languages (Yiddish, Hebrew, Persian, French, English, Arabic) that she has undertaken since her arrival in Paris in 2003. Jacques Rancière reads a passage from his text The Emancipated Spectator, in which he describes an important moment in the development of his thought that led him to “reformulate the established relations between seeing, doing and talking”, and comments on the function of contemporary art.
The installation is completed by a soundtrack of Rola singing in different languages and by photographs of the Ile Seguin, subtitled by some of those songs lyrics.
On Two was exhibited in Jeu de Paume, France, 2010, MCBA, Lausanne, Switzerland, 2012, UQAM, Montreal, Canada, 2014, Guangdong Museum, Guangzhou, China, 2015-16.

A l’occasion de l’exposition rétrospective d’Esther Shalev-Gerz Ton image me regarde !? au Jeu de Paume, la directrice Marta Gili lui commanda une nouvelle œuvre. Au travers de cette commande l’exposition ne s’en tient pas à un regard rétrospectif sur l’œuvre de Shalev-Gerz mais souligne son exigence à comprendre la façon dont le passé s’actualise dans le présent.
D’eux présente un univers habité par deux philosophes qu’Esther Shalev-Gerz a rencontrés à Paris mais qui ne se connaissent pas et deux paysages qui ne partagent ni le même temps ni le même espace.
Les deux vidéos montrent les moyens respectifs que Rola Younes et Jacques Rancière mettent en œuvre afin de renouveler leurs perceptions et leur rapport au monde. Avec en arrière plan des paysages de l’île Seguin à l’ouest de Paris et de l’île Cortes au large de la côte ouest du Canada, Rola Younes parle de sa passion pour les langues et leur culture (le yiddish, l’hébreu, le perse, le français, l’anglais, l’arabe) depuis son arrivée du Liban à Paris, il y a sept ans. Jacques Rancière lit un passage de son texte Le Spectateur émancipé dans lequel il décrit un moment constitutif de sa pensée qui l’a amené à « reformuler les rapports établis entre voir, faire et parler » et où il commente la fonction de l’art contemporain.
L’installation est également composée d’une bande son dans laquelle Rola Younès interprète des chansons en différentes langues et de photographies de l’île Seguin sous-titrées par des extraits des paroles de ces chansons traduits en français.
