FemmeMaison – Architecture as self

2013
Tjolöholm, Sweden
Pigments on canvas, variable dimensions

Located on the Swedish west coast, Tjolöholm castle is designed in the Art & Craft Style and demonstrates the architectural need of displaced people to perpetuate the culture of their life styles. The history of Tjolöholm also contains Lars van Trier’s choice to use the castle as a location for his film Melancholia, at a moment in his life when he discovered that his father is German and not Jewish-German.

This expression of identity inspired Esther Shalev-Gerz to work with the Master in Fine Art students from the Valand Academy, where she was teaching at the time, to reflect on the site. Each student and teacher involved in the project created an artwork displayed in a one-month collective exhibition in the castle and its grounds.

Shalev-Gerz individually photographed all the participants in the exhibition, students and teachers, faces up to the sun against a deep blue-sky, apparently dazzled. She then edited those portraits, inserting lichen-covered balls of stone photographed outside the castle and now floating in the background. The new images were printed on canvas.

Through this artistic intervention, Tjolöholm will continue to enrich its heritage just as the lichen will continue to decorate its stones.

FemmeMaison – Architecture as self

2013
